Head’s Weekly Update

Welcome to the first newsletter of the Summer Term. It has been great to be back and get the term underway. Academics are at the forefront of everybody’s mind at present and we wish our Upper Sixth and Year 11 students well as they undertake the final run-in to their summer exams.

Staying with the theme of academics, we are piloting a number of software platforms in the background this term. Our ambition is to find the optimum platform for teachers, students and parents in respect of understanding how each child is currently doing in every subject, what their knowledge gaps are and where to go to fix them. We hope to be in a position to launch something at the start of September 2025 with Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 students and have all year groups incorporated by Easter 2026.

The other big event currently is the process for student allocations to their new Divisions. I have detailed below the timetable for this. The key thing you will notice is that we have built in two weeks for the Pastoral and Learning Support Teams to review and refine these allocations prior to announcing. This is because we obviously cannot have 420 individual negotiations but we can use our knowledge of the students and their relationships to find the best solution. Please click on the link below for more information:

Campus 2030 Phase 1:  Student Division Allocation and Summer Term Key Dates for Activities in both Old and New Divisions

You will see from the attached document that this is a carefully crafted schedule that blends the emergence of the new Divisions with the conclusion of the old and balances the need for the psychological comfort of current friendship groups with the desire for competitive balance and equality.

In this newsletter you will find:

COLLEGE NEWS THIS WEEK

Financing & Law Networking Event

On Thursday 24 April the College hosted a Financing & Law event for our Sixth Form students. Ten delegates from across the Pangbourne Community generously gave their time to chat with students about their experience of the sector, covering all aspects of finance and law. Among the areas covered were media law, corporate banking, the judiciary and entrepreneurship. The students left the event inspired and excited by the insight they gained into the careers available.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to those OPs, and both current and former parents, who gave their time so generously to support the College.

‘Beyond The Frame’ International Photography Competition

Congratulations to two of our Sixth Form students, Emily (Lower Sixth) and Max (Upper Sixth), who have been shortlisted for an international photography competition 'Beyond the Frame 2025' run by Norwich University of the Arts. Their work is available to view online here and was exhibited at the University of Arts in Norwich over the Easter holidays.

RAF Benson Trip

On Thursday a group of 14 female pupils attended the RAF Benson 'See it to Be it Event'. This is the College's third year at the event and it never fails to inspire both staff and pupils who attend.

After a welcome address by Wing Commander Alice Tierney, we were allowed to move around the different stands excited to be introduced to different women from a range of careers. There were not just RAF and Forces careers on hand to talk to the girls: professional rugby players with caps for England and Wales respectively; a professor of Conservation from Oxford University; a BA Pilot First Officer; a female paralympian and an explorer who has solo travelled to different continents in her trusty 4x4.

The main message of the day was to grasp opportunities and to say 'yes' - you never know what path it will lead you on. The girls (and staff!) came away excited and inspired having seen and met so many incredible women.

If your child is unable to attend the Open Morning then please send an email to Mr Mark Seccombe with the reason for their absence.

Please note, students are required to arrive on site before 09:45 to avoid congestion with our visitors. There will be no access to the Parade ground after 09:30.

    Thank you.

  • Year 7 and 8 exams will take place between Monday 2 June and Friday 6 June.

Year 9 exams will take place between Monday 9 June and Friday 13 June.

There is an in-person Year 7 and 8 parents'/guardians’ evening on Friday 20 June.  More information will be sent out closer to the time.

  • For all parents who kindly attended one of the ‘Coffee With The Head’ sessions last term, we would like to let you know that the follow up session will be taking place on Thursday 22 May at 18:00.

Those who attended will receive an email next week to confirm their attendance.

  • Come and celebrate the very best of Pangbourne's musical talent at the Pangbourne Proms.  Bring your picnic and join us on Devitt Lawn for a relaxed family evening of performances from the College's talented musicians who'll be demonstrating their versatility with a varied programme covering all genres of music and not forgetting our legendary marching band.

Details of how to book your tickets will be released in next week's newsletter.

Years 9 -11

  • Hopefully you have seen plenty of flashcards flying around at home recently and maybe even be asked to do some quizzing on some of them!

Year 10 exams start on Monday and end (in most cases) on Friday next week. It might be a good time to get an exam pencil case ready  - not compulsory at this stage -  but will be needed for Trials in November next year so no bad thing to be prepared.

In it, they should have everything they might need for their exams (including a calculator/Maths set where relevant).

  • I hope that the Easter holidays were calm and focused, filled with plenty of revision but also some good down time.

Hopefully flashcards are in evidence at home and maybe you are even being asked for help in quizzing on them. GCSEs have already officially started, well done to Art and Photography pupils for getting things underway on Thursday and Friday this week.

Language speaking exams start over the next few days and then written papers start with PE on 7 May. The Year 11 pupils through their practice in trials are well drilled and are good at being organised with the right kit for the right exams, so I trust everything will run really smoothly.

Please see here for a schedule of Year 11 Revision Clinics.

  • Year 11 Duke of Edinburgh’s Award pupils should be congratulated for their excellent behaviour on the Silver DofE practice expedition at the end of last term.

SIXTH FORM

  • Please see the following message from, ‘A Bridge for Young People’:

We are sorry that the original jump date was cancelled due to bad weather. After sending out a poll to all the skydivers most people could attend Sunday 4 May and therefore, we have now booked this date for the skydive.

If you can make 4 May then please ensure that you have read the forms required below:

115A Self Declaration British Skydiving Medical Form – please have a good read through this form and if anything applies you will need the below form signed before being able to skydive.

115B Doctor’s Medical British Skydiving Medical Form – please get this signed by a Doctor/GP we cannot accept Doctor’s letters or any other form of Doctor’s sign off.

Address: GoSkydive, Old Sarum Airfield, SP4 6EBl

What if you can't make Sunday 4 May?

Don't panic, all you need to do is let Lee know by emailing  leeshergold@bfyp.org.uk and send over some alternative date options. Lee will then work with you to rearrange a date for your skydive and make sure they will still be there to support you.

Lee will be in contact with the students with their new jump times, but the location will be as before.

    Thank you.

  • The Trials will commence the week of the 19 May. Students will receive their timetable shortly. Pupils have been advised by subject teachers about the topic areas to focus on.

  • As shared previously, before half term pupils are expected at scheduled lessons unless...

    • They are in an exam

    • There is less than 30 minutes remaining in a lesson after an exam finishes (e.g. if their exam finishes at 10:50, they would not be expected to attend the remainder of P3 but they should attend P4 at 11:15)

    • It is P3, P4 or P5 before an afternoon exam

After half term, pupils are on study leave and are not expected in lessons. Teachers have been asked to try and keep themselves available in the periods where they would have had lessons if pupils want to come in for additional support.

  • These webinars will take place on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 April as well as Thursday 1 May.

Please click on this link for further information and on how to sign up.

  • All Lower Sixth students will be offered the opportunity to attend the University and Apprenticeship Fair at Oxford Brookes University on 18 June.

Along with this it is also worthwhile to attend some open days at universities of interest. A list of universities and dates can be seen here.

  • Please see here for a schedule of Upper Sixth Revision Clinics.

  • I do hope that you all managed to enjoy some time together over the Easter holiday. The weather was fantastic for the most part, and the sunny start to term has meant that cricket and tennis has got off to a flying start.

Talking of sporting activities, we have the College cross-country event on Monday afternoon, the 100% Colour Run. I reminded all the pupils this morning to make sure they have a plain white T-shirt for this, and to avoid wearing any clothes they would be upset to get a little powder paint on!

Parents of Year 8 pupils are hopefully aware of the Camping Trip next week on Thursday/Friday. The permission form for this trip can be found here and if this could be completed as soon as possible I would be very grateful. They will be free to be collected as soon as they return to College on the Friday, but they may of course remain with us until the normal end of the day if early collection is not possible. The exact time of return will depend on how fast each group walks, but from experience the first groups often get back shortly after lunch, although some may not be back until 3 or even 4pm.

On Thursday this week the Year 8 girls had a fantastic opportunity to meet a number of inspiring women involved in careers not traditionally associated with women. The event was held at RAF Benson and was a really useful trip. I am hoping that our Year 7 girls will be able to attend next year.

    Best wishes as always,

    Dr Ian Hart

  • The boys seem to have returned in good spirits for the Summer term, the spring break seems to have worked for them. It has been good to hear about their exploits and trips, a number have been involved in DofE, rowing camps and pre-season activities.

This term goes very quickly and exams start even earlier this year for all year groups. We hope that revision will pay off and they will achieve the results that they deserve, particularly in the public exams.

At the end of last term a number of Harbinger boys were recognised for their academic efforts and Flag awards during the end of term assembly. Huge congratulations to Alex C, Aaron, Cameron, Joseph, Noah and Matthew for your efforts all round and thank you for contributing to Harbinger’s success.

The boys are involved in a lot of co-curricular activities this term, I am looking forward to hearing of their successes representing the school  in rowing, tennis, cricket, horse riding and golf and am looking forward to taking the Year 9s to Llangorse for DofE. We have the annual 100% Colour Run on Monday which is an event in which everyone from the division is required and I am sure we will see great efforts from them.

The link for the Harbinger Divisional Dinner on Saturday 7 June is here. This will be held at Goring & Streatley Golf Club and is for all Harbinger parents and Upper Sixth pupils are also invited. If you have any specific seating requirements then please do email the House team account: harbingerhousestaff@pangbourne.com

  • Welcome back for the Summer term! Easter seems a distant memory now, however, I hope that the boys enjoyed some down time. I know the GCSE and A Level students will have been balancing working with downtime.

It has been nice talking with the boys about their activities over Easter and hearing from some about their endeavours on their Duke of Edinburgh walks.

The boys are involved in a lot of co-curricular activities this term, I am looking forward to hearing of their successes representing the school  in rowing, tennis, cricket and golf and I hope that all of the Year 9 boys are looking forward to Llangorse for their DofE trip in the last week of this half of term. We have the annual 100% Colour Run on Monday which is an event in which everyone from the division is required and I am sure we will see great efforts from them.

I know that it is not long now till the start of exam season and I have been impressing on the boys the need for focus and this is the time to seek that final support from staff before they begin in just over two weeks.

As ever if you have any questions please do get in touch at hesperushousestaff@pangbourne.com.

  • It only seems like yesterday we were breaking up for the Easter break. It has already been a busy few days, and the tempo does not look like it will drop any time soon. On the horizon, Year 11 and Upper Sixth will be starting their public exams , and I urge them to make the most of the coming weeks; utilising their teachers and any academic clinics where possible to give them the best opportunity when they begin.

Outside of the classroom, tennis is already in full swing with the first fixtures this Saturday after Open Morning. Rowing is beginning to ramp up its training efforts, ready for the season, and cricket will soon be out on the square, soaking up the summer term sun. Elsewhere, Year 9 will be away on their Llangorse trip before the half-term break, alongside a number of other events woven around the timetable.

The summer term is a wonderful time of year, and I look forward to seeing the girls making the most of the excellent facilities we have here at Pangbourne.

We are very much looking forward to the Illawarra Dinner next Saturday 3 May at Goring & Streatley Golf Club, which promises to be a fantastic evening. All parents and Upper Sixth students are welcome, so please do sign up here - we’d love to see as many of you there as possible.

We’re also excited about the 100% Colour Run on Monday, which is always a highlight of the term. It’s a brilliant opportunity for the whole community to come together, and the Illawarra girls are ready to bring the colour and the energy!

  • Welcome back to the Summer Term. Whilst the sun will start to shine, it will warm up and (before long) we will be staring down at a long summer break, there is a huge amount of work to do before then.

All year groups have exams this term and public exams start in two weeks time. I know that the boys will be working hard towards these but my message is always the same… “leave nothing to chance!”

Away from the classroom the term is looking to be as busy as ever. Sport, divisional competitions, the Llangorse trip for Year 9 along with a myriad of other events will mean that organisation is key. Please do get in touch if you have any questions about events or timings.

Finally, please sign up for the upcoming Macquarie Dinner on Saturday 17 May at Goring & Streatley Golf Club. There are just a few tickets remaining for what should be a wonderful evening. Tickets can be purchased here.

  • So the final term of the year has begun and already we are into exams. Art GCSE are completing their final pieces as I write this, BTEC students are preparing for modules and A Level Art is next week. The formal written GCSE and A Level papers start very soon and Year 10s have their exam week next week. Please encourage the girls to keep revising. Little and often is best for most people with a plan for what they want to achieve rather than just sitting for a set amount of time.

The St George Dinner is next Friday 2 May at Goring & Streatley Golf Club. I am looking forward to a lovely evening with about 50 of us in attendance.

Monday is the 100% Colour Run and unless the girls are registered off games I expect to see everyone complete this at a pace that suits them. In recent years, Rubi has posted a very fast time which is amazing but I am also always proud of those who are not runners but ensure they get round and finish in a time that gets the division points. The colour part is optional but great fun and the girls will need a white t-shirt to run in which they don’t mind getting paint on.

Rowing: Ghent Training Camp

The 2025 Ghent training camp was, once again, a huge success. The team made substantial technical and physiological progress, setting a strong foundation for the upcoming summer racing season. We returned to Pangbourne on Good Friday, tired but inspired and ready for what lies ahead. Read the full story on our website here.
