Head’s Welcome

I’m delighted to be launching our new Parent Newsletter with you this week. I hope that you will find the format easy to navigate, and its content informative and useful. We will be striving to fine-tune the newsletter in the coming weeks, so I look forward to your feedback on the structure, and where we can improve.

Last weekend, it was wonderful to see the Pangbourne community come together for our first College Sunday of the academic year. As always, our students’ hard work at parade practice was demonstrated in another fine display of teamwork and leadership. I look forward to watching the students who are new to this ceremony develop their confidence and skills over the coming year.

Thank you to the parents who have written in with feedback on the current College day. Not being the architect of the model has meant it has taken me, like all of us, a while to understand how all the moving parts fit together. In my weekly meeting with the two Chiefs today I will be reviewing the timings and listening to their feedback. This will then be reviewed at the Senior Leadership Team meeting on Tuesday with a view to removing any major hurdles.

Best wishes

Oliver Knight

COLLEGE NEWS THIS WEEK

College Sunday

COLLEGE SUNDAY

The first College Sunday of the academic year took place on Sunday, 22 September. This was a particularly significant occasion as the school welcomed our new Head, Mr Oli Knight, as Inspecting Officer for the first parade of his tenure. It was also the first College Sunday for our new Chief Cadet Captains, Kit and Grace, who led the parade with confidence and pride. Despite the damp weather, it was a delight to see so many attend and support this important event.

ST GEORGE TRIUMPH AT DIV MUSIC

Last night, the Chapel came alive with enthusiastic performances from our six senior Divisions competing in this year’s Divisional Music Competition. This popular event was as spectacular as ever with memorable performances from across the College, with St George stealing the crown with their rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘The Chain’. Congratulations to all who participated!

UPCOMING EVENTS

NOTICES

  • You will no doubt have seen recently in the press a number of stories about school attendance, holidays in term time and increasing fines for non-attendance at school. The College, (and all independent schools), is now subject to the same statutory position as the maintained sector. This necessitates a change in both our attendance protocols and how we approve or decline student absence along with our processes for students with low attendance. The full policy can be found on the College website. Appendix 1 details how to request absence. The main things to note for now are:

    1. Applications for authorised leaves of absence during the College day will only be granted in exceptional circumstances, should be made at least a week in advance and will only be permitted if made in writing via My School Portal. (From the menu, select My Children and then Pupil Absence from School Request)

    2. For unexpected absence (illness), please use the respective division email address to notify the House Team.

If you have any initial questions, please direct them to the College’s named Attendance Champion, Mr Mark Skidmore (dhp@pangbourne.com).

  • Thank you to all students who are involved in the Open Morning on Saturday 5 October. If your child is participating, they will have been sent an email with instructions for the day. If you have any queries as to your child's involvement, please contact their Housemaster/mistress.

If your child is unable to attend the Open Morning then please send an email to Mr Mark Seccombe with the reason for their absence.

Please note, students are required to arrive on site before 08:30 to avoid congestion with our visitors. There will be no access to the parade ground after 08:30.

  • Year 8 pupils will have the opportunity to apply for a scholarship in their chosen field as they enter the Senior School in Year 9.

Awards are available in the co-curricular areas of Art, Drama, Music and Sport, in addition to the Academic Scholarship.

If pupils feel they would like to try for an award in the co-curricular areas above, we would encourage them to speak first to the appropriate subject teacher or Head of Department.

The application process is now open, and all the information you should need, as well as the application forms, can be found on the Website, which can be accessed via this link .

Please note that the deadline for Drama, Music and Sport Scholarship applications is 30 September 2024, with the auditions and sport assessments taking place during November 2024.

The deadline for Academic and Art Scholarship applications is 29 November 2024. All assessments in these areas will take place in January and February 2025.

  • Last week, the Key Stage 3 pupils completed the first round of mastery quizzing. This has been introduced to reinforce the crucial pieces of information the pupils need in order to make progress within their subject areas. All of the pupils completed questions from their STEM subjects (Maths, Sciences, Computer Science). There will be a variety of prizes available for pupils based on excellent performance in individual quizzes or progress across the term. All of the Core Knowledge the pupils need for their quizzing has been published to Google Classroom and it can also be found on MySchoolPortal here. You will also be able to see how your child has done in their quizzes through MySchoolPortal by clicking on the Google Classroom link on their dashboard. Look for the 'Mastery' class towards the bottom of their list.

  • Creating an environment that nurtures pupil mental health and wellbeing is a key priority for us at Pangbourne. To help us to achieve this, we have invested in a ‘Wellbeing Hub’ which has been developed byTeen Tips who are experts in child and adolescent mental health and wellbeing.

This is an interactive online portal, designed to help you understand and meet your child’s social and emotional needs. We believe it will be an invaluable source of information and support for our whole school community.

  • On Friday 11 October, after drop off, there is an opportunity to join Mark Skidmore, Deputy Head Pastoral, and Caroline Bond, Assistant Head, Pupil Mental Health in the College Café at 08:30 for a relaxed and informal chat over coffee.

It is also an opportunity to meet other parents, as well as the key pastoral staff.

We really hope to see you there.

  • Last term, we asked parents to get in touch if they were interested in a Boot Camp class being held at the College one morning, after drop off. Frazer Mott is hoping to run that class and has asked if those still interested could get in touch with him directly, either by phone or email: 07557053343 or Frazer@fdmfitnesstraining.co.uk

FIVE YEAR EDUCATION STRATEGY

It is with great pleasure that I introduce Pangbourne College’s Five Year Education Strategy. This outlines our determination to be at the forefront of UK education and helps demonstrate the true value of a private education. This strategy sits within our wider Five Year Development Strategy. The Development Strategy encompasses all aspects of College life, from our campus development, through to communication and technology.

Education is our core business and therefore warrants its own dedicated publication. The Education Strategy is designed to enable all Pangbournians to go out into the world and live an authentic life; to meet challenges head on and to develop the character to act with confidence in imperfect situations.

SIXTH FORM

  • It has been a pleasure seeing the Sixth Form students around campus as they settle into their lessons and independent study. The focus this term is on the pupils putting good systems in place to help them manage their workloads and extra-curricular activities, particularly for the Lower Sixth as they transition from the demands of studying for GCSEs to A Levels and BTECs.

  • Ms Kaur, Head of Sixth Form, would like to make you aware that the College will be rolling out the platform UNIFROG to the Upper Sixth before half-term, and then to the Lower Sixth, with the support of Mr Nel, Head of Careers. UNIFROG offers is a one-stop shop for up-to-date information on post-18 options with regards to universities, virtual work experience opportunities, and apprenticeships.

Used by nearly 4,000 schools and colleges, we are excited about using UNIFROG to be able to offer our pupils greater support in relation to making good decisions about their future.

    • Early Oxbridge application date: Thursday 10 October (internal deadline)

    • UCAS deadline: Friday 8 November (internal deadline)

    • Apprenticeship Event: Thursday 28 November 17:00 - 19:00

    • Upper Sixth trials: Monday 25 - Friday 29 November

  • After an exciting start to term with the visit of the ‘Circus Allstars’, we are now fully in the swing of things. Our new pupils have settled quickly, and I can hardly believe we are already more than two weeks in.

You may be aware that the College Open Morning is coming up soon on Saturday 5 October, and I would very much appreciate any Year 8 (or brave Year 7!) pupils (and their parent(s)) who would be willing to come in and spend the morning with us in Dunbar to meet and talk with the prospective parents. Having current pupils and parents on hand is tremendously valuable, and if you could spare any time to join us I would be most grateful to hear from you.

On a practical note, many small items of clothing and stationery etc. can go missing, but those which are labelled generally find their way back to us, whilst those that aren’t generally don’t, unfortunately.

    Dr Ian Hart

  • I have been really pleased with the efforts from the boys these past couple of weeks. Classcharts are looking very green across the board which is encouraging. The boys have worked hard on their Div song under the guidance of Max, Jack and Ed, they have all had to flex out of their comfort zones and explore the outer limits of their vocal range!

It was good to see so many parents on College Sunday and catch up afterwards in the Gunroom. I thought the boys put in lots of effort with their uniforms and it showed with their marching, hopefully we will soon have the new Year 9s up to speed and marching with confidence. Thank you also to the PPA representatives for introducing yourselves to everyone.

There is now a Harbinger House WhatsApp group that you can join. Please contact Andrew Sumner for details.

  • It has been a busy couple of weeks for the boys and I have been very impressed with all of their efforts. In the House Herd competition, positives awarded these past three weeks have seen the lead Herd change three times, with Scottish Red with a seven point lead at present, and all to play for as we progress towards half term. Dom and the Upper Sixth have been working hard with the boys rehearsing for Div song and it has been great to see the performance developing as the rehearsals have progressed.

College Sunday was a great day and all the boys worked hard to ensure shoes and suits were on point. I was really impressed with the boys in Year 9 and their efforts in marching, and also to those who were performing in the Marching Band. It was lovely to welcome so many of you back into Hesperus for drinks afterwards.

    Tom Cheney

  • It’s been a hop, skip and jump for my Illawarriors as we embark on a new academic year with a busy timetable to match. The girls have shown great determination and have achieved many positives while adjusting to the new pace and demands of the school day. I would especially like to congratulate my new girls on adapting so quickly and taking everything in their stride. They have shown excellent grit, and I am proud they are in my Division. I am immensely proud of Illawarra who put on a fantastic display of unity at the College Sunday event. I would like to thank the parents who showed up in large numbers to support their daughters, despite the drizzly weather.

Lessons aside, Divisions have been rehearsing for the Division music event with a 1970s theme. It has been wonderful to see the girls come together and deliver an outstanding performance. "Don’t blame it on the sunshine, blame it on the boogie." I hope the girls will get some well-deserved rest over the weekend.

    Rosie Jewell

  • Whilst there is no denying that the first few weeks of term have been busy, I have been really impressed with the resilience shown by all the boys in Macquarie. The new timetable will take time to bed in but they have gone about their days with a spring in their step. I’m sure they are starting to get tired and this coming weekend gives them an excellent opportunity to recuperate.

Our new starters have been particularly impressive and have enjoyed getting stuck into College life. Over this last week, watching them take part in their first Parade was a special moment and their efforts during the Divisional Music competition was another highlight. Of course, they have been driven forward by the rest of the Division who have returned from the Summer in fine form.

An impressive start and we look forward to more of the same as we head towards Half Term.

    David Metcalfe

  • I have been thoroughly impressed by the attitude and adaptability of the boys these last few weeks. Although change can be challenging, they have taken it within their stride and have shown resilience and perseverance. The positives have been rolling in and this week’s wolf pack scores are as follows:

    Amwolf - 70 (Nabil 13, Ed 12, Nate 12, Charlie 12)

    Ardwolf - 21 (Will 6, Harry 6)

    Beowolf - 47 (Otto 9, Jan 8, Harrison 7)

    Bodolf - 45 (Rob 12, Harrison 11, Zac 8)

    Gunnolf - 34 (Joe 15, Charlie 6, Steven 6)

With regards to the College Sunday just gone, I thought on the whole the boys turned out superbly. The new entrants in both the senior rank and Year 9 squads were ‘thrown in at the deep end’ and they certainly revelled in the chance to show us what they can do. A special mention to Murrewa and the leadership team for their efforts during parade practices to set the standards high and lead from the front. It's great to see them continue the momentum into the Divisional Music competition.

Overall a fruitful beginning to the start of the term and the exeat has certainly come at a good time. I wish the boys a restful weekend.

    Steven Thompson

  • It has been great to see the Division working so hard in the build up to Div Song. As I write this we don’t know the result, but I am incredibly proud of how hard they all worked and the amazing effort put in by our Chief, Amy, in deciding how to arrange and interpret the song. I hope you managed to hear it and if you missed it please have a look on the college YouTube channel for the recording.

I think we were all impressed by how well the Parade went last Sunday. St George was looking very strong with nice straight lines. The Year 9s looked to have mastered the basics nicely and I can’t wait to see them joining the main division.
